I hope you all had a great Christmas.
This year, for the first time ever, we had our meal out! It was fantastic – such a relaxed morning. We had bacon rolls, watched TV and listened to music with a Bucks Fizz and opened our presents. We then got ourselves ready and headed to our local for Christmas Dinner. There was a busy hubbub of excitement and a festive atmosphere. A few of our neighbours were there too! I really enjoyed the experience. We then got the family together again on Boxing Day for steak pie, chips and peas!! This has become a bit of a tradition in our house.
What can we say about 2023? A year that we won’t be sad to see the back of. A year of war, worldwide natural disasters, strikes and a cost of living crisis. The world, and certainly businesses in the U.K. are now feeling the effects. I have definitely seen a drop in trade.
Poor weather, online shopping and the convenience of Amazon is always going to make it tough for small retailers. I’m guilty too – I place online orders. However, for goods such as clothing and footwear particularly, it is not quite so convenient when you have to arrange to return unsuitable goods. There is nothing like physically trying before buying. There is also the personal touch. The advice and expertise of someone who really knows their product is so helpful and builds a relationship of trust.
I am thankful to all of my customers and I feel grateful that I’ve come through yet another turbulant year. “Scraped through” would be a better description, but we are still here and I plan to continue working hard to retain and grow the business.
