Ian and I travelled to London last weekend and attended the buying exhibition at Olympia. I found some really pretty jewellery which I am likely to order for the summer and I gathered a few new contacts to consider. However, this particular event was more focused on homeware and gifts, so the next two upcoming exhibitions are going to be much more suitable for my shop. I’m glad I went though – it was a day out afterall!
January and February are notoriously difficult months for small businesses at the best of times, but this year it is particularly quiet. I completely understand that with the hike in the cost of living, the fallout from Christmas spending and the promise of new season arrivals around the corner, it is no wonder! In addition to this, the weather is my biggest enemy! I cannot blame people for not wanting to turn out – it’s worth remembering that we do have a website so that you can browse from home, and delivery is free on purchases over £50.
As you’ve probably gathered by now, I am quite a positive person and I am confident that things will get better. My message, is to ask, that if you are thinking about replacing your old boots, need a new pair of trousers, have some Christmas money to spend, planning a holiday wardrobe, or simply fancy treating yourself, that you consider shopping small first. Everybody wants their High Streets full of independents and would truly be sad if they were gone, but we do need your support to see us through difficult times.
It works both ways right? It is difficult for us to compete with the large well known brands, so we are limited to how much we can afford to do. However, in order to make things more attractive, our 20% off ALL footwear promotion, remains in place in store (and online via telephoning the shop). We also have a very generous up to 50% off sale rail with limited sizes, as well as a “last chance to buy” rail where there are even fewer sizes available, and these too have a 20% reduction.
